Bigin is the right call for teams under 10 reps with a clean linear pipeline. Past that, the simplicity becomes a ceiling. Knowing when to move matters more than how.

The Five Upgrade Signals

You’re ready to migrate when at least three are true:

  1. You need more than one pipeline per team and Bigin’s connected pipelines are getting tangled.
  2. You want module-level forecasting, not just deal totals.
  3. You need scoring rules with multi-criteria weighting.
  4. Your reps want territory-based ownership.
  5. Marketing wants to push lifecycle stage data back into the CRM.

Single-signal triggers (one rep wants reports) usually mean you needed a better Bigin setup, not a migration.

What Actually Migrates Cleanly

Out of the box, the upgrade tool brings over Companies, Contacts, Pipelines (as Deal stages), Activities, and custom fields. Files attach. Notes attach. Email history reattaches if you’d connected the same mailbox.

What does not auto-migrate cleanly:

  • Bigin’s “Toppings” — most have CRM equivalents but not 1:1; rebuild.
  • Custom views with complex filter trees — recreate manually.
  • Workflow automations — Bigin’s are simpler than CRM’s; redesign rather than port.

The Layout Trap

Bigin’s single-page record view is one of its best features. Default Zoho CRM gives you a tabbed view that feels heavier. Use Canvas to recreate the Bigin density on Day 1 — otherwise reps will complain for a month.

Pricing Math Before You Commit

CRM Standard at the per-user list price plus 12 months runs roughly 4x what Bigin Premier does. If your driver is “we want better reporting,” try Zoho Analytics on top of Bigin first — that often defers the upgrade by a year for half the cost.

Migration Sequencing

Run the sandbox migration first, freeze writes in Bigin for two hours during cutover, then redirect API integrations. Don’t try to run both in parallel — dual-write bugs eat weekends.

What to Do This Week

  1. Score yourself against the five signals.
  2. If three or more, request a sandbox migration to validate field mapping.
  3. Build the Canvas layout before reps log in.
  4. Plan a 2-hour write freeze, not a phased cutover.
